Good morning Principal, teachers and fellow students. I’m Ms Kan. Today, I’d like to share a book with you. Before talking about the book, I’d like to ask you a few questions.
Did you celebrate Mother’s Day with your mum last month? How did you celebrate the day with her to thank for her love and care? It’d never be too late if you didn’t. You may celebrate it on Father’s Day at the same time. We shouldn’t take their love and care for granted. We should show our appreciation from time to time.
Lately, I read a book called ‘A Child called “It”’, written by Dave Pelzer. I’m sure that all of you know that we should use the pronouns ‘he’ or ‘she’ when referring to a ‘child’. Why did Dave name the child ‘It’?
The book talks about the childhood of Dave, the book’s author, which describes one of the most severe child abuse cases in California history. His story illustrated the dark side of child abuse and the horrible childhood that he had in the early 70s, with extreme torture and suffering that he had experienced. Having no choice to live with his emotionally unstable and alcoholic mum, he was brutally beaten and starved. He did his best to survive from his mother and tried to stay alive from the pain of hunger, bruises and cuts he had received.
When I first read the story, I felt devastated and heartbroken, the vivid details of everything he had to endure, the pain and his feelings. I couldn’t imagine his own mother transformed from a loving mother to an abusive mother so quickly. She abused him every single day. She took her frustrations out on him for no reason. What Dave had gone through was totally unbearable, and was treated like an animal, if not worse. This was why the author named himself as “It” in the book’s title. Luckily, his dream of wanting a happy and safe family, and also being someone gave him hope and kept him alive.
In the end, he told the school the truth and he was finally taken out from the horrible home and put into a much better home, which is a foster home.
Child abuse happens everywhere in the world and it is something horrible but still existent in our society. Treasure everyone in your family as they are all being kind to you. If you’re interested in Dave’s story, read his book, ‘A Child called “It”’.
