Being Positive about Life----- Harry Sigerson 19/12
Good morning, Principal, colleagues and students. Thank you for the chance to talk to you today.

I want to talk to you today about ‘optimism’ (乐观主义 le\guan-zhu\/yi\). This means always seeing the best in every situation. Always thinking only good things will happen, that everything will be wonderful.

This sounds very good but why should everything be wonderful? What if everything does not go well? What if things go really badly? Thinking that everything will be great cannot help you then, can it? You hoped for a happy ending but now you have a sad ending. Thinking everything was great did not help!

So instead, today, I want to talk to you about Being Positive. Being Positive is NOT the same as Being Optimistic. When you are optimistic you only think about the best thing that can happen.

When you are Being Positive…

… you CAN think about the bad things that can happen.

You SHOULD think about the bad things that can happen.

In fact, you MUST think about the bad things that can happen!

Being Positive is about HOW you think about the bad things that can happen. Being Positive means asking yourself, “WHEN the bad things happen, and they will, HOW will I react? What will I do?”

Will I cry, “Everything always goes wrong for me! Nothing I do can change that! Poor me!”

Will I blame other people saying, “This person or that person did this to me!”

Or will I say,

“This bad thing has happened, what can I do to make it better?”

“What can I do to make it better tomorrow?”

“What can I do to stop it happening again?”

And… “What can I do to stop it happening to other people?”

It is more than planning for the worst. We all do that. When we get in a car, we put on our seatbelt. When we cross the road, we look both ways. Being Positive is about what happens after we put on our seatbelt but still have a car crash. Being Positive is about what happens after we look both ways but still have an accident.

When you are being optimist, you say, “Everything will be great, I don’t need to put on my seatbelt.”

When you are Being Positive, you say, “What do I do to make the best of my life, even if I am hurt in an accident and I am wearing a seatbelt?”

If you are honest about the bad things that can happen, it does NOT mean you are a negative person. Bad things will happen. This is about HOW YOU THINK ABOUT the bad things and HOW YOU CAN MAKE THEM BETTER for yourself. So, to finish, please start practicing how to BE POSITIVE about the bad things that happen in your life. Start with the small bad things, so that you can be ready for the big bad things. Your life will be happier because of it.

Thank you.

Be grateful. Treasure what we have. 24/10 Mr. Cotton
Good morning, Principal, students and fellow teachers. Today I want to talk about the idea of being grateful and treasuring what we have. This morning, I’m going to give you the chance to dream a little. First, I want you to imagine that you’re 25 years old. Now imagine that you’ve just passed your driving test. Finally, imagine that you have unlimited amounts of money. What would you choose as your first car?

For me, I would just choose a standard Toyota. They are not so expensive but they are very reliable. But actually, here in Hong Kong the public transport system is excellent, so maybe I wouldn’t need a car at all. Travelling to school on bus number 72 every day is fine for me. It’s comfortable and reliable.

Now some people might say that I’m so boring and that if I was so rich, I should buy a Tesla or even a Ferrari or Lamborghini. People would look at me as I roared past them and the sound of the engine would hang in the air even when I was well out of sight. But I would say to them, why would I need such an expensive car? I think it would be just to show off to others! Would driving a fast super car around the crowded streets of Hong Kong really make me happy in the long term?

A lot of people always assume that we should buy the biggest and best of everything if we have the chance and that owning these things will make us happy. However, it’s an interesting fact that once humans have their basic needs met such as food, shelter, education and health, buying more does not make us happier.

Now you might say that if your parents bought you the latest phone or best gaming computer then you would be really happy. But soon you’d become bored and a few months later you’d want the latest phone or computer. Instead, we should be happy with what we have. Spending time with family and the people we care for is far more important than material objects that can get lost, broken, stolen or become outdated. So, to conclude, I just want to say that whatever we have in our lives, we should be grateful and treasure what we have. Is it really necessary to have more money and material things to lead a happy life? Having more of these things gives us happiness, but only temporarily. Focus on the things that are most important to us such as friends, family and health and be grateful for them. Thank you.

Ways to Cultivate Gratitude Ms Chan Lai Har 17/10
Good morning, everyone. Today I would like to share with you something about Gratitude i.e. to be thankful. Think now, what or who do you have in your life to be thankful for ? Your family, your friends, your teachers or your classsmates ? At the beginning of my sharing, I want to share a short story with you about gratitude/ being thankful. A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which read, “I am blind, please help.”

Some people walk by and put a coin or two in the hat as they hurried past. Then a man was walking by. He saw there were only a few coins in the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. Then he put the sign back in the boy’s hand so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.

Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy.

That afternoon, the man who had changed the sign returned to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, “Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?”

The man said, “I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way.”

You wrote, ‘ I am blind. Please help me.’

I wrote, “Today is a beautiful day, but I cannot see it.” Both signs spoke the truth. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind, while the second sign conveyed to everyone walking by how grateful they should be to see…They should be grateful as they could see the beautiful things around them.

When your life seems full of troubles, it seems difficult to maintain an attitude of gratitude, doesn’t it? All we see are our problems. And the times when everything just seems to be going smoothly? We often take these precious moments for granted too, don’t we? We can simply forget to be thankful. So the new sign actually, are reminding the people that they should not forget to be thankful. They had good vision. Don’t take it for granted.

So what, then, is gratitude ? Gratitude is a habit. It’s a way of looking at the world and all the good things in it with a feeling of appreciation. When you practice this feeling of gratitude, it attracts even MORE things into your life for which to be grateful.

Here are some tips to cultivate gratitude on a regular basis.

1. Write a thank-you note. You can make yourself happier and nurture your relationship with another person by writing a thank you note, expressing your enjoyment and appreciation of that person's impact on your life.

2. Thank someone mentally. No time to write? It may help just to think about someone who has done something nice for you, and mentally thank the individual.

3. Count your blessings. Pick a time every week to sit down and write about your blessings — reflecting on what went right or what you are grateful for. As you write, be specific and think about something good happened to you.

4. Pray. People who are religious like me can use prayer to cultivate gratitude.

Finally, I would like to use a quote to end my sharing today

“Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough.”
