Can you imagine a world without snow or ice? A world in which extreme weather conditions such as floods, sandstorms and droughts are commonplace? According to many experts, we are fast approaching such a world as a result of global warming.

Scientists generally agree that the average temperature of the earth is rising. This is caused by the emission of gases such as carbon dioxide and methane. These gases act like a greenhouse, trapping the earth’s heat inside the atmosphere and causing it to warm up. Over the last hundred years, levels of greenhouse gases have soared as a result of human activity.  (103 words)

Part C.  Seen Passage (35 marks)

How can ordinary people help prevent global warming? One way is to try to work out your carbon footprint. This is the sum of all the carbon dioxide emissions you are personally responsible for during a year. Most people are shocked when they see the amount of carbon dioxide their activities create! If you want to contribute to stopping global warming, the calculation and constant monitoring of your personal carbon footprint is essential.

Once you know your carbon footprint, you can work out a personal energy saving plan for yourself. This could include switching off lights in empty rooms and turning off computers and other electric items when not using them. You can also save a lot of energy by only using the dishwasher and washing machine when they are full.                           (131 words)
