Diligence Ms Yung

Date: 2025-03-10 11:10
Good morning, Principal, teachers and fellow students. Today I want to talk to you about a quality that is incredibly valuable: diligence. You’ve probably heard the word before—because ‘Diligence’ is one of the 4 houses of SFCC—so let’s explore why it’s crucial, especially while you’re in school. Imagine you’re planting a tree. You carefully choose the right spot and plant the seed, but this is just the beginning. For it to grow into a strong, flourishing tree, you have to water it, care for it, and protect it from harsh conditions. Similarly, diligence is like that daily care—it’s the consistent effort you invest in the journey of learning. First, let’s talk about growth. Just as a tree develops slowly, so does your understanding. Mastery of any subject doesn’t happen overnight. It’s the result of repeated efforts, doing assignments, solving new problems, and pushing through challenging topics. Diligence pushes you to be persistent, making you not just learn but truly understand. Secondly, diligence compensates for natural talent. You might think, "I’m not naturally good at Maths" or "English isn’t my cup of tea," but here’s the secret: diligent effort can outshine natural talent. Those who consistently apply themselves often achieve more than those who rely solely on their innate abilities. Additionally, diligence teaches resilience. Life isn’t a smooth road; it’s full of bumps and turns. When you dedicate yourself to being diligent, you develop resilience—the ability to face setbacks and failures, learn from them, and move forward. It’s an invaluable skill that benefits you well beyond school. Moreover, diligence is a pathway to opportunities. Diligence opens doors. Your sustained effort and commitment can set you apart, leading to more significant opportunities in the future. In conclusion, diligence isn’t just about hard work. It’s about working steadily and smartly towards your goals, developing resilience, and creating opportunities. As you go through your school years, let diligence be your guide, ensuring that you not only reach your potential but also enjoy the journey. This is what I want to share today. Thank you.

Tsinghua University's Contributions to China's Technology
Posted by:

Date: 2025-01-09 10:22
Good morning Principal, teachers and fellow students. Today I would like to share Tsinghua University's contributions to the field of technology in China. As one of the top higher education institutions in China, Tsinghua University plays a significant role in various technological fields. 1. Engineering Technology Tsinghua has trained a large number of outstanding talents in civil engineering, making significant contributions to China’s infrastructure development. In this field, Tsinghua's research teams continuously drive technological advancements, involving cutting-edge technologies like robotics and automation. 2. Information Technology Tsinghua University is a leader in computer science research in China, focusing on artificial intelligence, big data, and cybersecurity. The research outcomes from Tsinghua have played a key role in the development of China's internet industry. 3. Materials Science Tsinghua has made significant progress in researching nanomaterials and composite materials, which have wide applications in industries such as aerospace and automotive. 4. Sustainable Development Tsinghua's research in clean energy, environmental protection, and urban sustainability provides scientific foundations and technical support for China's response to climate change. 5. Technological Innovation and Entrepreneurship Tsinghua actively promotes the transfer and industrialization of scientific achievements, with many alumni achieving remarkable success in entrepreneurship, contributing to China's innovation ecosystem. 6. International Collaboration Tsinghua has established extensive cooperative relationships with top universities and research institutions worldwide, fostering international collaboration in the field of technology. The most impressive aspect of Tsinghua to me was the hard work of the students there. When I was in secondary six, I was invited to attend a short exchange tour at Tsinghua University. Many students were studying in the study room, even late at night. It wasn't during the exam period, and they told us that without continuous hard work, they couldn't achieve success. I was shocked at that moment. I realized I had been too lazy and didn't fully understand the sacrifices others made in pursuit of their dreams. Since then, I've embraced the concept of 'no pain, no gain.' From that moment on, I remind myself to work diligently in order to achieve my goals, even when I feel tired." It is the end of my sharing. Thank you for your listening.

Monday Sharing (04/11/24) Mr. Cotton

Good morning, Principal Wu, fellow teachers and students. Today I want to talk about the importance of treating people kindly or politely. On an aeroplane at take-off and landing, it is important that the aircrew can talk to air traffic control. Both must speak clearly to avoid confusion and prevent accidents. While the aeroplane is flying, its aircrew are in constant communication with air traffic control – communication is vital if everything is to go smoothly and safely. Some of us may have heard the saying ‘you are what you eat’; well, it would be equally true to change it to ‘you are what you say’. What we say often shows others what kind of person we are. For example, if we tell lies, it shows others that we are dishonest. If we say one thing to one person and something different to another, it shows that we are two-faced. If we use sarcasm, it might show that we have a high opinion of ourselves. Sometimes, we can find that our tongues have a life of their own and get out of control. How tempting it can be to gossip! There is a quote by the former American president, Eleanor Roosevelt: ‘Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.’ We all know how tempting it is to say things to impress other people: using foul language, telling crude jokes or being unkind to someone, all so that certain people like us. We also know how difficult it is to control angry words at times. Another quote states: ‘I lose peace of mind when I give someone a piece of my mind.’ We all need to remember that ‘we are what we say’. Wherever we are and whoever we’re with, we should try to control our tongues. When we are tempted to use angry words, to lie, to gossip or to be sarcastic, we must try to look for the best in people. Speak politely and give praise and encouragement instead of criticism. Also remember that being polite comes through our actions as well. Helping a teacher carry something, picking up something for someone if they dropped it, holding a door open for others, or even just paying attention and listening to what someone says – these are all ways we can show politeness without words. People will respect you for it. As another famous quote says, ‘Friends and good manners will carry you where money won’t go.’ It is difficult for us sometimes to do what is right or to be brave when we are afraid. It isn’t always easy to be cheerful when we are disappointed or to be nice when we feel angry. Let’s give it a try and always s peak and act nicely to others at all times. Let’s be kind. Thank you.
